I feel compelled to write about our experience at the Revamp Inpatient Rehab Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital . My Cousin having suffered a major Stroke spent a couple of months at the University Hospital of the West Indies in an Acute Care setting, Finally, she recovered enough and she was given the green light from her doctor to be transferred to the Revamp Inpatient Rehab Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital. When she arrived there, her cognitive, physical, and daily living functions were severely altered, She was non-verbal, paralyzed on the right side(her dominant side), non-responsive, incontinent and was being fed via a peg tube. The Rehabilitative/Restorative care started almost immediately and I actually met my cousin’s Occupational Therapist the day after her arrival to the Unit. Ms.Fleur Minott Nembhard. She was doing her treatment at the bedside but informed me, that based on the results of her assessment, the patient will be going to the OT clinic for her therapy. I was amazed because she already had Betty sitting on the edge of the bed talking with her and giving her instructions in her calm, compassionate, caring and very professional manner.I was already impressed and knew immediately my cousin was "in good hands!” My cousin spent the next 3 months at that facility and left there fully oriented, eating a solid diet and able to feed herself, smiling again, able to engage in conversation. Her right side functioning remained a challenge but the expert care and instruction from her Occupational Therapist provided her and the family, on tips on how to continue to bring her closer to independence. I visited The OT Clinic several times during her stay and I was so impressed that even with the limited space Ms. Minott Nembhard has, she is able to have ALL the necessary equipment etc. to achieve her and the patient’s goals for a successful recovery... It was obvious that Mrs. Fleur Minott Nembhard creates an individualized programme for her patients to regain strength, balance, and functional abilities. We were discharged with recommendations for mobility aids, and strategies to maintain safety at home and continue on the path of independence. Prior to discharge, the home caregivers, were each instructed by Ms. Fleur Minott Nembhard on how to safely move the patient from sitting to standing, and getting in and out of bed safely. I will be forever grateful to The OT Clinic for all the expertise in facilitating my cousin’s progress mentally and physically. Our Goal is to continue as an outpatient. With sincere thanks. -MS.
