INPATIENT REHABILITATION

Patients who are on the medical/surgical ward of St Joseph’s Hospital or on the Revamp (Inpatient) Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit are able to access occupational therapy following a referral from a physician.
The location of The OT Clinic on the hospital compound allows easy access and transportation.
Patients receive a comprehensive evaluation which includes mobility, postural control, cognitive status and functional skills.
The occupational therapist as part of the rehab team contributes to the management of the patient by:
  •  Providing training in self-care activities (e.g., bathing, dressing) with adaptive or durable medical equipment and/or compensatory techniques if needed.
  •  Use of neuromuscular re-education, trunk stabilization, and balance activities to improve clients’ ability to move in and out of bed and maintain an upright posture necessary to perform self-care and home management activities.
  •  Remediation of upper-extremity weakness and/or abnormal muscle tone through exercise, relevant simulated activities, and preventive splinting to preserve muscle balance and range of motion.
  •  Evaluation and use of strategies to address cognitive and perceptual deficits.
  • Providing wheelchair assessment and management to promote endurance and mobility, depending on patient readiness.
  • Contributing to safe discharge planning, including recommendations for transitioning to the next level of care.
  • Training patients in postsurgical orthopedic protocols, including appropriate weight bearing and/or postsurgical precautions during activities of daily living (ADLs).
