NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with the nervous system and its diseases. Rehabilitation through Occupational Therapy means a multi-faceted approach to problems:
  1. Helping clients increase the functioning of disabled extremities and overcome disturbances in the ability to function
  2. Helping clients utilize remaining capabilities to reach their highest potential in meeting the demands of daily living
  3. Family/caregiver training to facilitate a smooth transition from rehabilitation to successful integration into the home and community
At The OT Clinic an assessment is done of the capabilities of the client to determine a baseline of function. A treatment programme is established with the client (and rehabilitation team as indicated). The treatment programme is then planned so as to eliminate or diminish disability through the use of purposeful activity, exercise and training techniques.
Reassessment of capabilities and progress are continued on a regular basis to determine gains made and to prevent problems from developing.
Preventative measures such as splinting (custom made or prefabricated) and positioning must be utilized to eliminate contractures, deformity, skin breakdown or other secondary problems.
Conditions managed include Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, cerebral vascular accident CVA (STROKE), Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Head Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and Spinal Cord Injury.
