Stroke Treatment

​A stroke can cause temporary or permanent paralysis on one side of the body. It can also affect balance, vision, memory, speech, and cognition, and cause other complications such as muscle spasm and pain.
For these reasons, people who have experienced a stroke may have difficulty with daily activities (occupations) such as bathing, dressing, and managing a household, and with performing familiar roles(e.g., parent, spouse, employee).

At The OT Clinic we address the physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges brought on by a stroke, our goal being to help stroke survivors engage in the things they want and need to do.
Patients are evaluated and a problem list established. Therapy can include:

• Sensory reintegration
• Bed mobility training
• Wheelchair mobility and management training
• Functional transfer training (wheelchair/commode/shower/car)
• Dressing/Bathing/Grooming retraining
• Homemaking retraining
• Therapeutic exercises to improve strength and coordination
• Splint fabrication/ orthotic fitting
• Functional electrical stimulation
• Postural retraining – balance
• Cognitive and perceptual retraining
• Exercises to improve standing and endurance
• Changing hand dominance
• Range of Motion exercises
• Leisure/ hobby skills development
• Bilateral integration/hemi techniques
• Home assessments for equipment, accessibility and fall prevention recommendations
