BACK SCHOOL

​The BACK SCHOOL offered at The OT Clinic is an educational programme designed for clients who:-
  1. Have never had a back injury – Primary Intervention
  2. Have suffered an injury and experience chronic or a re-occurrence of a specific complaint- Secondary Intervention
  3. Are post-operative
This seven session programme which can be offered individually or to a small group is designed to comprehensively cover information to assist the client to understand /manage/ prevent a back condition.
Clients will learn:

  • How to TAKE CONTROL of the condition
  • How to move safely to avoid future problems
  • Exercises to ease pain and improve mobility
  • Basic anatomy of the structures of the spine
  • Self-treatments
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Safe lifting techniques
  • Proper body mechanics for everyday activities of daily living
  • Sound work postures and ergonomics

This programme (as a secondary intervention or for the post-operative client), in conjunction with or after physical therapy, seeks to reduce functional disability and educate the client on the appropriate management of their condition.
The BACK SCHOOL also provides instructions for workers who may be at risk for a back injury because of the specific demands of their job.
